Challenges
The primary challenges for the RAF Benson project were to decrease utility expenditure across the Ministry of Defence (MoD) estate, align with the client’s environmental targets, and simultaneously enhance the working environment while improving visibility.
Design Solution
To address the challenges at hand, a comprehensive solution was implemented. The initiative involved the replacement of 80 existing high bay yellow SON 400w lamps with Philips GentleSpace Luminaires across the RAF Benson estate, yielding remarkable results. Specially crafted LED lighting schemes were tailored to align with the operational requirements of specific buildings, supporting efficiency and operational activities.
The sleek and purposeful design of the LED technology not only achieved a substantial base energy saving of over 30%, but also contributed to a reduction in CO2 consumption and maintenance costs, all without compromising on light quality. In fact, the implementation of the white light solution resulted in enhanced light levels, increased visibility, and improved safety and security.
Peter Smith, Head of Sustainability at Interserve, remarked, “The dramatic change that has resulted from the lighting upgrade has not only delivered the cost savings that we hoped to achieve but significantly improved the working environment.”
