Challenges
The primary challenges for the Headley Court project were to create a more inviting environment for nearly 100 in-patients and numerous visiting outpatients, reduce maintenance requirements, utilize light to enhance healing outcomes, support the client’s environmental targets, and increase user control.
Design Solution
Addressing these challenges necessitated a thoughtful and comprehensive design solution. The refurbishment incorporated energy-efficient light sources, including Philips CoreView LED panels for attractive, uniform corridor lighting, and Philips LuxSpace LED compact downlighters in the wards to reduce maintenance needs. PETALE luminaires with sound-absorbent panels were strategically placed in communal breakout areas and around the nurse’s station to enhance the environment.
To create a unique healing atmosphere, HealWell lighting was installed in four individual patient rooms. This ambient lighting system allows patients to control the lighting through a touchpad, enabling them to switch between pre-set scenes tailored to their preferences.
The lobby of the Peter Long Unit underwent a transformation, becoming a more inviting and ambient space. Philips Luminous Textile Panels were introduced as a modern and dramatic intervention, complemented by controllable colour coving to establish art walls and emphasize the concept of each room.
The overall impact of these lighting solutions has been substantial, significantly improving the appearance of the wards to make them lighter, brighter, and more welcoming. In addition to saving energy compared to traditional fluorescent downlighters, these choices have reduced maintenance requirements and the disruptions caused by frequent lamp replacements. Integration into a user-friendly touch panel interface has given staff and patients greater control over their environment. The feedback, in terms of visitor and staff experience, as well as healing outcomes, has been overwhelmingly positive.
